Hyundai Motor India is targeting combined annual sales of 2.5 lakh units for the Creta and newly launched Bayon from calendar year 2027, as it seeks to defend its leadership in India’s growing monocoque mid-size utility vehicle market.

Managing Director Tarun Garg described the Bayon as a strategic addition that would broaden Hyundai’s customer base and help sustain the momentum following the GST reduction.

“The golden product life cycle for Hyundai begins with the Bayon,” Garg said. “It is not just a product. I think it is a very, very strategic addition to our portfolio.”

The Bayon joins a competitive monocoque mid-size UV category that includes the Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Tata Sierra, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. These vehicles use an integrated body and chassis structure, unlike ladder-frame SUVs such as Mahindra’s Scorpio and Thar ranges.

While the Creta remains the category’s best-selling individual model, manufacturers with multiple offerings are strengthening their positions. During January–September 2026, the Creta recorded 143,424 units, giving it a 23.9% share. Maruti Suzuki’s Victoris and Grand Vitara together sold 173,022 units, accounting for about 28.8%. Kia’s Seltos recorded 99,655 units, followed by Toyota’s Hyryder at 78,140 units.

The Bayon gives Hyundai a second nameplate to address that competition and capture demand beyond the Creta’s established customer base.

Garg said Hyundai expects the Creta to close the current calendar year at around 1.7 lakh units. The company has not disclosed a separate target for the Bayon and will adjust the mix according to demand.

“250,000 is not a limit. 250,000 is very clearly a baseline,” he said.

Hyundai estimates average monthly monocoque mid-size SUV volumes of around 72,000 units in 2026, compared with 23,000 units in 2021, representing a compound annual growth rate of 25.6%.

It forecasts monthly volumes reaching 118,000 units by 2032, with the category’s share of total SUV sales rising from 28% to 36%. Based on those projections, the category would account for roughly two-thirds of incremental SUV volumes over the period.

“Now, with one model, how much can you do?” Garg said. “If there is an opportunity, then why not?”

Hyundai intends to distinguish the Bayon through technology and powertrain choices. It offers a 115 PS, 1.5-litre petrol engine, with CNG scheduled to follow in January 2027. Features include a generative AI voice assistant using Perplexity and SoundHound technology.

In Hyundai’s product line-up, the Bayon will sit between the Venue and Creta, which is due for a generation change next year.

Diesel will remain important for the Creta and Alcazar. Garg said the diesel Creta continued to carry a waiting period of more than four weeks because of limited supplies.

The Bayon will be manufactured in Chennai, helping absorb capacity released by the transfer of Venue production to Pune. Exports, greater localisation and shared components will support production scale and cost control.

“We want to grow responsibly and sustainably,” Garg said.
