Hyundai Motor India Ltd. has officially commenced production of passenger vehicle engines at its Talegaon manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, marking a significant milestone in the South Korean automaker’s India operations.
The company informed the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE today that production at the Talegaon Plant—located in MIDC’s Phase-II Expansion area in Tehsil-Maval, Pune District—has begun effective June 16, 2025. The development is in line with Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in India.
This engine production start precedes the launch of full vehicle manufacturing at the same facility, for which the company stated a separate notification will be made in due course.
Hyundai had acquired the Talegaon plant from General Motors in 2023 as part of its long-term strategy to enhance local capacity. The plant acquisition is a key element in Hyundai’s broader ambition to increase production volumes and support the growing demand for its vehicles in the Indian and export markets.
With this move, Hyundai becomes the latest global automaker to deepen its localisation efforts in India, which is now the world’s third-largest car market.
Hyundai’s Talegaon plant in Maharashtra, originally built by General Motors in 2008, has been revamped as part of Hyundai Motor India’s ₹6,000 crore investment plan. Acquired in 2023, the facility spans 300 acres and earlier had a capacity of 130,000 vehicles and 160,000 engines annually.
Now integrated into Hyundai’s manufacturing strategy, the plant will complement its existing Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai, easing capacity constraints and supporting future ICE and EV models. Production of passenger vehicle engines began on June 16, 2025, while vehicle manufacturing is expected to commence later this year. The plant is also poised to support exports and localisation efforts.
