Hyundai Introduces Usage-Based Insurance For Bluelink Customers
The programme links driving behaviour recorded through Hyundai’s Bluelink platform to insurance renewal benefits, with eligible customers potentially receiving up to 15% savings on own-damage premiums.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has introduced a Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme for eligible customers with Bluelink-connected vehicles, offering potential savings of up to 15% on the own-damage component of insurance premiums at renewal.
The programme assesses driving behaviour over the preceding three months to generate a UBI score, which participating insurers can use as part of their underwriting process. The initiative will be facilitated through Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB), which will act as an intermediary between HMIL and the participating insurance companies.
The programme will initially be offered in association with Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance. It will be available to eligible customers across Hyundai's product portfolio with Bluelink-connected vehicles and insurance renewals falling within the specified eligibility window.
How Hyundai's Usage-Based Insurance Programme Works
The UBI score will be calculated using vehicle-generated data collected through Hyundai's Bluelink platform. The assessment will cover driving dynamics, including rapid acceleration, deceleration and braking, as well as speed control and idling behaviour.
Customers will be able to view their driving scores and track their eligibility through the Bluelink app. Those with an insurance renewal due within the next 90 days will be able to check their scores and explore potential insurance benefits.
A score of 70 or above may make customers eligible for insurance benefits, subject to the underwriting policies, terms and conditions of the participating insurer. Customers scoring below the threshold can use personalised driving tips available through the app to improve their driving behaviour.
Customers will also have the option to share their UBI scores with participating insurers through the Bluelink app, subject to their consent. The insurers will use the scores as part of their assessment when determining the applicable insurance benefits.
According to HMIL, eligible customers may receive savings of up to 15% on the own-damage component of their insurance premium, depending on the insurer's underwriting rules.
HMIL MD and CEO Tarun Garg said the initiative extends the company's connected-car ecosystem into insurance by linking driving behaviour with potential financial benefits at renewal. The company currently has more than 0.8 million connected cars on Indian roads and is targeting one million cumulative connected-car sales by 2027 and two million by 2030 through its Bluelink platform.
