Hero MotoCorp Pauses Production to 'Navigate Supply Alignment'
The world's largest two-wheeler maker said it will also use the pause in production to carry out maintenance activities.
India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, said it will pause production at four of its six manufacturing plants for three days from April 17 to 19, 2025, citing the need for a "short-term supply alignment".
The production pause affects Hero's facilities in Dharuhera, Gurugram, Haridwar, and Neemrana, while operations at Tirupati and Halol plants will continue uninterrupted, according to a statement filed with the National Stock Exchange of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange. The company said it will use the opportunity to carry out maintenance.
"During this planned pause, we are taking the opportunity to carry out maintenance, upkeep, and facility enhancements to further strengthen our operations. Production will resume on April 21, 2025," the company stated in its official communication.
Hero MotoCorp has assured stakeholders that "this pause will not impact our ability to meet retail demand across domestic and international markets" and that "any production deferment will be efficiently recovered in the following month."
Meanwhile, February 2025 saw a concerning 7% year-on-year decline in total retail auto sales across all segments, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Two-wheeler sales specifically dropped by 6.3% compared to February 2024.
Interestingly, there has been continued strength of rural demand, which has been outpacing urban markets, which should augur well for Hero MotoCorp. Rural sales grew at approximately 6% compared to urban growth of only 3% in recent months, according to industry data.
Rural markets have traditionally been a stronghold for Hero MotoCorp, with its fuel-efficient commuter motorcycles like the HF Deluxe, Splendor+, and Passion brands enjoying strong demand in India's hinterland.
Industry analysts view this production adjustment as a strategic move to manage the supply chain and balance inventory levels, rather than responding to immediate demand concerns.
The ongoing wedding season in India, considered an auspicious time for vehicle purchases, especially two-wheelers, was expected to boost Hero's sales in the current quarter.
