Mahindra and Google Cloud have integrated an AI-powered in-car assistant into the BE 6 SPORTEQ electric SUV series, marking a shift in how Indian automakers are approaching the software layer of their vehicles. The system moves away from the rigid, menu-driven voice command interfaces that have been standard in the industry, replacing them with a conversational AI agent capable of interpreting open-ended natural language. The move positions Mahindra as the first Indian original equipment manufacturer to deploy such a system in a production vehicle.

The assistant runs on Mahindra's MAIA (Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture) platform and uses Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise language models to process driver requests without requiring specific phrasing or command structures. Rather than navigating through layered menus or memorising trigger phrases, a driver can speak conversationally and the system interprets intent. A request such as "it's a little cold in here" would prompt the system to adjust the air conditioning or open a window depending on conditions, without the driver specifying which control to use.

The system covers a range of in-car functions including climate control, lighting, window and sunroof operation, media playback, navigation, live weather updates, and owner's manual queries. Mahindra has indicated the platform is designed to be updated with additional agents over time, suggesting the feature set is expected to expand beyond the current launch configuration.

Sashi Sreedharan, Managing Director of Google Cloud India, said the partnership would allow drivers to navigate vehicle features "in a more natural and helpful way," adding that the deployment represents an early application of what he described as agentic AI capabilities to the automotive sector.

Binoy Paul, Head of Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra, said the MAIA agent enables "natural, conversational control over navigation, media, climate, and core vehicle functions," and that the platform is built with the intention of continuing to evolve as new agents are developed for both drivers and passengers.

The deployment reflects a broader shift in the automotive industry, where several global manufacturers have begun embedding generative AI into vehicle software stacks in recent years. Mahindra's integration with Google Cloud places it among that group, while also marking a first for an Indian-headquartered OEM.

Mahindra, founded in 1945, employs around 324,000 people across more than 100 countries and holds a significant share of India's utility SUV market. Google Cloud serves customers in over 200 countries and provides the underlying AI infrastructure and models used in the integration.
