Taiwan-based Foxconn is looking to offer two-wheeled EV manufacturing services in India.
The company in its annual report, stated that India will also assist with the establishment of a production line this year, to provide two-wheeled manufacturing services, and combine the group’s BOL (Build Operate Localise) policy to cater to the two-wheeled electric vehicle market in Southeast Asia.
With an understanding of the global trend towards regional manufacturing, 'the Company established the BOL (Build-Operate-Localize) business model two years ago, expecting to create the triple win scenario of local countries, local partners, and Hon Hai,' the report added.
Regarding R&D for four-wheeled electric vehicle drive systems, the report further said that it has applied emphasis on two major technologies: Firstly, the development of forward-looking AI technology, to integrate the resources and capabilities of Hon Hai Research Institute, optimize the design capabilities of motors and drives, and improve the overall efficiency of the drive system to strengthen the competitiveness, and; Secondly, the manufacturing advantage of high in-house production efficiencies, mastering the key production know-how, and provide key parts for production of electric power steering systems (EPS) to Tier 1 system manufacturers.
In an earlier interaction with Autocar Professional, Horace Luke, CEO and co-founder of Gogoro said that India had the potential to be an electric vehicle export hub. Talking About his global alliance with Foxconn, he had said that “The battery hardware is all designed by us, but we use Foxconn to localise battery technology here in India."
In June 2021, Foxconn and Gogoro began collaboration on multiple projects including smart batteries, vehicle engineering and manufacturing. By integrating Foxconn’s strong manufacturing, global capabilities and top quality, Gogoro is focusing on its own product design, technology development, marketing and branding, expanded distribution and customer service channels.
On his second visit to India earlier in March this year, Foxconn chairman Young Liu had said that his trip to India supported the Taiwanese contract manufacturer’s efforts to deepen tie-ups and “seek cooperation in new areas such as semiconductor development and electric vehicles.”
His first trip was in June, 2022, when Prime Minister Modi met Young and welcomed Foxconn's plans for expanding its electronics manufacturing capacity in India.
