Flipkart reaches 10,000 electric vehicle milestone, advancing towards 100% electric logistics fleet by 2030
With over 10,000 EVs deployed, Flipkart improves last-mile delivery efficiency by 20%, invests in charging infrastructure, and moves closer to its goal of a fully electric fleet for sustainable logistics by 2030.
Flipkart has successfully deployed over 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its delivery fleet, marking an important milestone in its effort to transition to a fully electric logistics network by 2030, as part of the Climate Group's EV100 initiative. This achievement follows a phased integration of EVs into the company’s last-mile delivery operations in recent years. The milestone was announced ahead of Flipkart's upcoming Sustainability Action Summit 2024, scheduled for 13th November at India Habitat Center in New Delhi.
Currently, 75% of Flipkart's electric fleet is concentrated in Tier-I cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In August 2024, Flipkart reported that more than 55% of its grocery orders were being delivered by EVs. Additionally, during the 2024 festive season, over 16% of grocery deliveries to Tier-2+ cities like Lucknow, Sonipat, Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar, Malda, Hubli, and Vizag were made using the EV fleet, ensuring more sustainable deliveries during a peak period.
The adoption of EVs has led to operational improvements, including a 20% increase in last-mile delivery efficiency and a reduction in operational costs at the hub level.
As part of its transition, Flipkart has invested in charging infrastructure, partnering with the Adani Group to establish 38 dedicated charging sites across Tier-2 cities, equipped with a total of 190 chargers. The company also plans further developments in public charging infrastructure to support broader EV adoption. Additionally, Flipkart has introduced a Last-Mile Aggregator model in Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, working with EV-focused fleet operators to strengthen supply chain operations and expand the use of electric vehicles.
Hemant Badri, Senior Vice President and Group Head of Supply Chain, Customer Experience & Re-commerce Business at Flipkart, commented on the milestone, stating that the deployment of over 10,000 EVs represents more than just a logistical change. He emphasized the company’s commitment to creating a positive environmental impact while improving service efficiency. The continued investment in both the EV fleet and charging infrastructure, he noted, aims to drive operational excellence and set an industry standard for sustainability.
Nishant Gupta, Head of Sustainability at Flipkart, highlighted the company’s continued efforts to electrify its fleet and the importance of ecosystem interventions to sustain and accelerate EV adoption in India. He expressed confidence that Flipkart’s partnerships with various stakeholders, including OEMs, EV service providers, charging infrastructure partners, and financing bodies, would support the goal of achieving a 100% electric last-mile fleet by 2030. Gupta added that the shift to EVs not only aligns with Flipkart's sustainability goals but also improves the service experience for delivery executives, while contributing to cleaner cities.
Flipkart has expanded its product offerings by including two-wheelers on its platform, allowing customers to purchase bikes and scooters from various brands. This move is part of Flipkart's strategy to diversify its e-commerce portfolio and cater to a broader range of consumer needs. The two-wheelers available on the platform are offered by established manufacturers, with options spanning different price points, features, and specifications to meet the preferences of a wide customer base.
Customers can explore a variety of two-wheeler models, including both traditional fuel-powered vehicles and electric scooters. Flipkart provides detailed product descriptions, specifications, and customer reviews to assist buyers in making informed decisions. The platform also offers flexible payment options, including installment plans and cash-on-delivery services, making it more accessible to a larger audience.
In addition to the convenience of online shopping, Flipkart ensures a smooth delivery process for two-wheelers, with the vehicles being shipped directly to the customer’s location. The company also provides after-sales services through partnerships with service centers to support maintenance and repairs.
