Fire at Hyundai Mobis Plant Raises Risk of Production Disruption at Hyundai Motor India

A fire at a Hyundai Mobis supplier facility near Hyundai Motor India's manufacturing complex at Irungattukottai on Sunday afternoon has raised concerns over possible disruption to vehicle production, with the automaker assessing the availability of parts and inventories.

The fire broke out around 3:30 pm at a Hyundai Mobis plant that manufactures audio, video and navigation (AVNT) systems and related electronic modules supplied to Hyundai Motor India.

Sources familiar with the development said the incident occurred at the Mobis facility and not inside Hyundai Motor India's vehicle manufacturing plant.

The extent of damage to the facility and information on any injuries were not immediately available. Hyundai Motor India was yet to issue an official statement at the time of publication.

According to supplier sources, Hyundai has sufficient stock to support immediate production requirements. However, the company is expected to take a call on subsequent shifts after reviewing the situation and assessing the impact on component supplies.

"As per the current inventory position, the first shift should be manageable. Further decisions will be taken after a review of the situation," a supplier executive said.

Industry sources said the affected facility supplies infotainment and electronic modules used across Hyundai's vehicle range. Any impact on production will depend on the extent of damage at the plant and how quickly operations can be restored.

"The implications for Hyundai's production schedule will become clearer once the assessment is completed," a person aware of the matter said.

The incident comes as Hyundai Motor India continues to operate at high production levels to support domestic demand as well as exports. The company manufactures a range of passenger vehicles from its Tamil Nadu facility, including the Creta, Exter, Verna and Aura, and remains one of the country's largest passenger vehicle exporters.

Located within the Chennai automotive manufacturing cluster, Hyundai's operations are supported by a network of supplier facilities situated close to the plant, enabling the company to receive components on a continuous basis and minimise inventory holding requirements.

Officials and suppliers are expected to assess the situation on Monday, when a clearer picture is likely to emerge on the extent of the damage, recovery timelines and any impact on vehicle production.

An email sent by Autocar Professional to Hyundai Motor India seeking comments on the incident and its impact on production operations remained unanswered at the time of publication.
