Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches crossed the 500,000-unit milestone for the first time in October 2026, driven by inventory build-up ahead of peak festive demand, according to a report from PTI.

Industry wholesales for the month were estimated between 5.25 lakh and 5.30 lakh units, representing a growth of 14 to 15 percent compared to 4.60 lakh units dispatched in October 2025, despite a high base.

"My take is, the industry should be between 5.25-5.3 lakh units," said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer at Maruti Suzuki.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki reported domestic passenger vehicle sales of 212,384 units in October 2026, marking a 20 percent year-on-year increase. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited recorded a 21 percent growth in domestic sales to 73,894 units, while Mahindra gained 2 percent year-on-year with 73,338 units. Hyundai Motor India Limited recorded a 17 percent increase in domestic wholesales, dispatching 62,799 units during the month.

With Dhanteras and Diwali falling in the first half of November 2026, October factory dispatches largely reflect vehicle stocking across dealership networks to support customer deliveries. Industry analysts noted that October retail registrations are expected to show a moderation against the previous year's high base as a significant portion of final festive deliveries shifts into November.
