FADA: Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Hit Record 4.11 Lakh in June as Alternative Fuel Share Crosses 40%
Passenger vehicle retail sales grew 28.63% year-on-year in June, while CNG, hybrid and electric models together accounted for over two-fifths of registrations for the first time.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said passenger vehicle retail sales climbed to a record 4.11 lakh units in June 2026, marking the highest-ever June performance for the segment. Retail volumes increased 28.63% year-on-year from 3.19 lakh units. They were also up 2.05% sequentially from May's 4.03 lakh units, supported by healthy bookings, improved supplies and sustained demand across alternative fuel powertrains.
June also marked a milestone in India's passenger vehicle market as alternative fuel vehicles collectively crossed the 40% market share mark for the first time. According to FADA, CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles together accounted for 40.35% of total PV retail registrations in May, up from 38.02% in May. CNG remained the largest alternative fuel with a 24.33% share, followed by hybrids at 8.27% and battery electric vehicles at 7.75%. Petrol-powered vehicles accounted for 43.63% of registrations, while diesel's share continued to decline to 16.02%.
Electric passenger vehicles also reached a new retail milestone during June. FADA reported that 31,823 electric passenger vehicles were retailed during the month, the highest monthly volume recorded so far. Compared with June last year, EV market share increased from 4.80% to 7.75%, while hybrids edged up from 7.97% to 8.27%, underlining a gradual diversification of India's passenger vehicle powertrain mix.
Rural Markets Continue to Outpace Urban Growth
The association's regional analysis continued to highlight the importance of rural markets in driving passenger vehicle growth. Rural PV retail sales expanded 35.09% year-on-year, significantly outpacing urban growth of 24.67%. However, the monthly trend presented a different picture, with rural registrations slipping 0.11% from May while urban markets recorded 3.54% sequential growth. FADA attributed the temporary rural slowdown to the delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon, which deferred buying decisions in several agricultural regions.
Urban markets continued to account for the majority of passenger vehicle registrations, contributing 60.1% of June sales compared with 39.9% from rural India. Even so, the stronger annual growth rate in rural markets indicates that demand outside major metropolitan centres continues to expand faster than in urban markets, supported by improving incomes and wider availability of utility vehicles and alternative-fuel models.
Despite the record retail performance, FADA flagged dealer inventory as an area requiring close attention. Passenger vehicle inventory levels increased by one day during June to approximately 32-34 days, remaining well above the association's recommended benchmark of 21 days. FADA urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to calibrate wholesale dispatches more closely with retail demand during the monsoon period to avoid locking dealer capital in ageing inventory.
The segment also posted a strong first-quarter performance. Passenger vehicle retail sales during April-June FY2027 reached 12.56 lakh units, compared with 10.24 lakh units in the same period last year, representing year-on-year growth of 22.64%. Among all major vehicle categories tracked by FADA, passenger vehicles recorded the strongest growth during the quarter after excluding tractors, highlighting continued consumer demand despite rising ownership costs.
FADA noted that easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia helped stabilise OEM supplies during June, while manufacturer price increases implemented at the beginning of the month had only a limited impact on customer bookings. Dealers also cited continued interest in CNG and electric models alongside fresh product introductions, which supported showroom enquiries during the month.
Festive Season and New Launches Expected to Support Demand
Looking ahead, the association expects passenger vehicle demand to remain supported by healthy booking pipelines, growing acceptance of electric and CNG vehicles and new product launches. Dealer sentiment for the coming quarter remains positive ahead of the festive season beginning with Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam. However, FADA said the pace of the monsoon, additional OEM price increases and financing turnaround times will remain key factors influencing retail demand over the next few months.
