Exponent Energy, an Indian energy technology company, has launched its next-generation electric vehicle (EV) charging station, named P4, designed to improve charging speed, usability, and space efficiency. The charger supports a full charge in approximately 15 minutes and incorporates several engineering and design upgrades aimed at addressing common challenges in EV infrastructure.
The P4 station features a slim, wall-mounted design measuring just 400 mm in width, allowing it to be installed along the length of a parked vehicle. This configuration reduces the space required beyond standard parking bays, a feature intended to benefit urban areas where space is limited.
One of the notable updates is the introduction of a 3-axis cable suspension system, which reduces the physical effort required to handle the charging cable. The mechanism allows the cable to float during use and automatically retracts when disconnected. The charging connector is built with a full-metal housing and uses spring-compressed axial seals—similar to those used in LPG and CNG systems—designed to maintain functionality even when exposed to water.
Thermal management has also been enhanced. Building on its 2023 launch of offboard battery cooling, which circulates coolant from the charger to the vehicle, Exponent has added an offboard pre-heating function. This enables the charger to warm the battery in cold conditions before charging begins, helping maintain charging efficiency and support battery longevity across varying climates.
The P4 delivers up to 40 kW of power and is currently being deployed in multiple Indian cities. It is being used by OEM partners including Montra Electric, part of the Murugappa Group, and Omega Seiki Mobility, supporting both passenger and commercial EVs.
To improve user experience, Exponent has updated its mobile application to provide real-time information on charger locations and availability. The app supports a subscription-based charging model, allowing users to initiate and complete charging sessions without physical keycards or on-site payments.
Since its founding in 2020, Exponent Energy has powered over 2,000 EVs, facilitated more than 800,000 charging sessions, and recorded over 50 million kilometers driven on its network. The company has expanded its operations to five additional cities—Delhi NCR, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Hyderabad—increasing its national footprint.
In August 2024, Exponent introduced a 1 MW rapid charging solution for electric buses, a first in India and one of only three such systems globally at the time. The company was recently recognized by the World Economic Forum, which included it in the 2025 cohort of Technology Pioneers—a list highlighting early-stage companies driving innovation across industries.
Arun Vinayak, Co-founder and CEO of Exponent Energy, said the P4 charger reflects insights gathered from earlier deployments. “We started with a minimal viable product to understand real-world usage,” he said. “The new station integrates those learnings to improve charging speed, reliability, and ease of use.”
Exponent Energy continues to operate as a full-stack energy solutions provider, developing battery packs, charging infrastructure, and proprietary connectors in-house. The P4 charging station is now being scaled across urban centers in India, with no immediate announcements regarding international rollout.
