India's electric vehicle (EV) retail market recorded its strongest monthly performance to date in June 2026, with total retail sales rising to 306,220 units, up 62.7% year-on-year from 188,773 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The growth was driven by record sales in the electric passenger vehicle (PV) and commercial vehicle (CV) segments, while electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) and three-wheelers (E3Ws) also registered healthy gains. Overall EV penetration in the domestic retail market crossed 12% for the first time, supported by rising adoption across vehicle categories. "June 2026 was a defining month in India's mobility transition. The industry retailed 3,06,220 electric vehicles—an all-time high in FADA's records and nearly 63% higher than a year ago," said C S Vigneshwar, President, FADA.
Electric Two-Wheelers Cross 1.93 Lakh Units
Electric two-wheeler retail sales stood at 193,735 units in June, registering a 13.5% month-on-month increase and a 75% year-on-year rise. EV penetration in the two-wheeler segment improved to 10.6%, up from 9.3% in May and 7% in June 2025.
TVS Motor retained the top position with 47,064 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 43,306 units and Ather Energy at 31,230 units. Hero MotoCorp recorded one of the strongest annual growth rates among major manufacturers, while Ola Electric's retail volumes declined on a year-on-year basis despite a sequential increase.
Three-Wheeler Electrification Continues to Lead
Electric three-wheeler retail sales rose to 77,448 units, an increase of 7.8% over May and 27.4% year-on-year. The segment remained India's most electrified vehicle category, with EV penetration at 64.1%, compared with 64.4% in May and **58.4% a year ago.
Mahindra Group led the segment with 12,838 units, narrowly ahead of Bajaj Auto, which retailed 11,279 units during the month. TVS Motor ranked third with 3,823 units.
Passenger Vehicle EV Sales Reach New High
Electric passenger vehicle retail sales climbed to a record 31,823 units, rising 19.3% month-on-month and 107.8% year-on-year. EV penetration in the passenger vehicle market increased to 7.7%, compared with 6.6% in May and 4.8% in June last year.
Tata Motors remained the market leader with 12,187 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 7,766 units and JSW MG Motor India at 5,861 units. Maruti Suzuki retailed 1,919 electric passenger vehicles, while VinFast recorded 1,404 units during the month.
Commercial Vehicles Also Set Monthly Record
Electric commercial vehicle retail sales reached an all-time high of 3,214 units, up 33.9% from May and 163.7% year-on-year. The segment's EV penetration rose to 3.53%, compared with 2.86% in May and 1.57% in June 2025.
Tata Motors led the category with 1,114 units, followed by Euler Motors at 700 units and Mahindra Group at 315 units. Switch Mobility and PMI Electro Mobility Solutions also posted strong sequential growth during the month.
EV Adoption Broadens Across Segments
FADA said June's performance reflected increasing adoption across all major vehicle segments rather than growth being concentrated in a single category. The association noted that legacy manufacturers continue to expand their presence in the electric mobility space alongside newer entrants, while higher penetration in two- and three-wheelers is contributing to broader EV adoption in the domestic retail market.
