Continental has announced on June 2, 2025, that it will discontinue the truck and bus radial (TBR) tyre manufacturing at its Modipuram plant in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, effective June 2025. The company will redirect its focus exclusively to passenger car and light truck (PLT) tyre production in India.
The decision follows what Continental describes as a comprehensive business review aimed at ensuring long-term viability in the Indian market. The company cited intense competition and high price sensitivity in the TBR segment as factors that made sustaining value from its offerings challenging.
Continental's strategic shift will affect the dedicated TBR manufacturing line at the Modipuram facility, though the plant will continue producing passenger and light truck tyres. The company has indicated it will provide support to affected employees, including career counseling, exploration of internal and external employment opportunities, and voluntary retirement packages.
The tyre manufacturer, founded in 1871, operates globally with sales of €39.7 billion in 2024 and employs approximately 190,000 people across 55 countries. Its tire division generated €13.9 billion in sales during fiscal 2024 and employs more than 57,000 people worldwide through 20 production and 16 development sites.
Continental maintains its presence in India through sales and distribution operations headquartered in Faridabad, Haryana, manufacturing operations in Modipuram, and a recently opened IT hub in Bengaluru. The company emphasised that India remains strategically important for its Asia-Pacific operations.
The realignment comes as Continental seeks to strengthen its position in India's passenger vehicle tyre market, where it aims to develop its local product portfolio and manufacturing capabilities. The company serves both replacement customers and original equipment manufacturers in the region.
Continental's tyre portfolio includes products for cars, trucks, buses, two-wheelers, and specialty applications, along with digital solutions and services for fleets and tire retailers. The company has operated in the tire manufacturing sector for more than 150 years and ranks among the world's largest tyre producers.
