Brazilian Experience Suggests E20 Fears Overblown: Infineum Experts
Fuel and additive specialists in Brazil state that modern fuel systems can easily adapt to E20, clarifying that historical failures were largely on early, pure-ethanol vehicles.
As India navigates widespread consumer anxiety over its national E20 rollout, historical data from Brazil – a pioneer in the use of ethanol – suggests that the transition may go smoother than feared.
When Brazil pioneered its aggressive ethanol mandates in the mid-1970s, it faced identical apprehensions from motorists worried about systemic engine damage. However, decades of real-world data show that standard petrol vehicles running on E20 and higher blends suffered no major mechanical failures, with historical issues restricted almost entirely to early vehicles running on pure E100.
For India's automotive sector, this South American precedent indicates that the long-term reality of higher ethanol blends may bypass the catastrophic engine failures currently feared by critics, top executives of Infineum, a global speciality-chemicals company, told Autocar Professional in an interaction.
Brazil has a long track-record of ethanol use, starting from the mid-1970s global oil crisis. "Brazil started the ethanol program during the oil crisis in the 1970s," says Peter Gilbert, Head of Operational Marketing and Customer Tech Services at Infineum Brazil.
Gilbert notes that the government there imposed a sudden transition from pure petrol directly to E20 (with a brief two- to three-year period of E10) and pure hydrous ethanol (E100), removing unblended petrol from the pumps entirely. "Our understanding is it was E20 and E100. There was no E0 when it was introduced," he notes.
While this sudden shift initially triggered concerns among Brazilian motorists, the catastrophic mechanical failures widely feared in India today did not materialize in Brazil's petrol fleet.
According to Dr Leandro Benvenutti, product manager for Latin America at Infineum Brazil, the historical engine failures often cited by critics were actually concentrated in dedicated, pure-alcohol vehicles running on highly corrosive E100.
"We don't really have any important record or memory of failures in gasoline-filled vehicles using E10 or E20 at that time," Benvenutti explains, emphasizing that issues were restricted to the early learning phase of pure E100 vehicles, which used inappropriate materials in carburetors, gaskets, and fuel hoses.
For modern, fuel-injected cars operating in markets like India, the mechanical risks remain minimal. While long-term exposure to higher ethanol blends can cause gaskets, hoses, and O-rings to dry out and become brittle, Benvenutti notes that this slow degradation can also occur with regular petrol over a five- to ten-year period.
The remedy is inexpensive and simple, consisting of routine rubber component replacements rather than complex engine overhauls. Furthermore, if a vehicle's closed-loop fuel injection system cannot fully adjust its calibration limits to the higher oxygen content of E20, the most severe outcome is typically a lean-running mixture that triggers a check-engine light on the dashboard, rather than terminal engine failure.
Real-world evidence supports this resilience. Brazil regularly operates imported, non-flex gasoline cars designed for European or Japanese markets on local E30 and E32 blends without documented engine issues. However, experts warn that the ultimate success of India's transition hinges on fuel quality rather than engine hardware. Contaminants like chlorine, which can arise from substandard ethanol refining and storage tanks, pose a real threat of severe injector clogging, corrosion, and emission-system damage.
While Brazil enforces a strict 1 ppm (parts per million) threshold, alongside tight limits on iron and sodium contamination, India has no BIS standard for chlorine, though a guideline of 3 ppm is now being enforced on ethanol manufacturers by the petroleum ministry in India. Ultimately, the lesson from South America is that robust engine hardware is only as good as the oversight behind it — a reality managed in Brazil by an independent government agency that samples over 5,000 fuel stations monthly to keep the supply chain honest.
