BPCL and GPS Renewables Form Joint Venture to Develop Compressed Biogas Plants

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and GPS Renewables Private Limited have signed a joint venture agreement to set up Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants across India. The agreement follows the initial announcement made on September 13, 2024.

The JV agreement was signed by Sameet Pai, Head (Corporate Strategy) at BPCL, and Mainak Chakraborty, CEO and Co-Founder of GPS Renewables, in the presence of BPCL Directors Sanjay Khanna and Raj Kumar Dubey.

The joint venture will develop 8–10 CBG plants in Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. These locations were selected based on the availability of agricultural biomass and BPCL’s city gas distribution coverage.

The initiative will convert organic waste into CBG using waste-to-energy technologies. It aims to support stubble management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create rural income through agri-residue procurement.

The JV aligns with national programs such as GOBARdhan, SATAT, and the CBG Blending Obligation.

India’s demand for clean energy alternatives is rising, driven by climate commitments and energy security goals. Compressed Biogas (CBG) is emerging as a key component in this shift, offering a renewable replacement for conventional fuels in transport and industry. Under the Government of India’s Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, over 5,000 CBG plants are targeted to be established nationwide.

The CBG sector also aligns with India’s bioenergy potential, as the country generates over 500 million tonnes of agricultural waste annually. BPCL’s move into CBG supports its 2040 Net Zero target for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. GPS Renewables brings technical expertise and a track record of over 100 biogas installations, including Asia’s largest RNG plant in Indore.
