BorgWarner to Supply Electrified Turbochargers to European OEM

BorgWarner has been selected by a European original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply its next-generation eTurbo system for an upcoming hybrid passenger vehicle program, the company announced on Friday. Series production under the contract is scheduled to commence in 2029. BorgWarner did not name the OEM in its announcement.

How BorgWarner's eTurbo Technology Works

The component incorporates an electric motor directly onto the turbocharger shaft to drive the compressor, eliminating turbo lag and accelerating boost pressure response. The system delivers 20 kW of continuous electrical power and up to 30 kW peak power, while converting surplus exhaust energy into electricity for the vehicle's high-voltage system.

400-Volt Platform Gets Silicon Carbide Upgrade

Built on BorgWarner's existing 400-volt eTurbo platform, the updated unit introduces remote power electronics using silicon carbide components to allow flexible positioning in tight engine bays. Operating at speeds up to 145,000 rpm and handling exhaust temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius, the system is designed to meet future global emissions standards.
