BorgWarner Secures European OEM Contract for Hybrid Range-Extended Vehicle Drive Module
The automotive supplier will deliver an 800V Integrated Drive Module combining generator and propulsion functions into a single system, with mass production set to begin in 2029 for a premium European automaker's next-generation range-extended electric vehicles.
BorgWarner has announced it has received a program award from an unidentified premium European original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply an 800V Integrated Drive Module (iDM) for use in a Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV). Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2029.
The iDM consolidates generator and drive functionality into a single electric machine — a design approach the company says offers significant packaging and efficiency advantages for range-extended powertrains. The system integrates an inverter, two clutches, and a dual-mass flywheel, and is paired at the system level with the customer's internal combustion engine. An all-wheel-drive mode is also available when conditions require it.
The inverter incorporated into the module uses BorgWarner's next-generation Viper power switches alongside dual-side cooled power module technology. The company states the platform is designed to meet demanding high-voltage and high-current operating requirements while providing strong thermal management performance.
Dr. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of PowerDrive Systems, noted that the program was led by the company's China team in collaboration with global counterparts. He described the award as a reflection of BorgWarner's capabilities in electric drive technology and system integration.
BorgWarner positions the contract as consistent with its broader strategy in electrification, citing in-house capabilities across electric motors, power electronics, software and controls, and system integration. The company did not disclose the name of the European OEM or the specific vehicle model for which the iDM is intended.
BorgWarner is a global automotive supplier with more than 130 years of history in mobility technology. The company develops products and systems for combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
