This edition of Autocar Professional examines how emission regulations and accelerating electrification are reshaping plans for automakers in India. For years, diesel has been the preferred choice for Indian SUV buyers, but hybrids are now emerging as a potential alternative. What was once a technology largely associated with Toyota and Maruti Suzuki is now finding its way into the plans of Hyundai, Kia, Renault, Mahindra and Tata Motors.
This shift is particularly relevant for manufacturers with substantial diesel businesses. While diesel remains important, tighter fuel efficiency norms and the rising cost of emission compliance strengthen the case for hybrids.
Hybrids are also set to move into compact cars and smaller SUVs, with Maruti Suzuki developing its own compact hybrid technology and Renault planning to extend hybrids to its upcoming sub-four-metre SUV. However, the market remains small.
This issue also examines Tata Motors' first year as an independent passenger vehicle company, Renault's Duster bet, Hyundai's SUV strategy and Stellantis' India plans. We also look at developments in the luxury car market, commercial vehicle uptime, automotive financing, component manufacturing and cyber security.
