Autocar Professional's August 1, 2026 Edition is out!

India’s automotive transition is accelerating, but no single powertrain is set to dominate. EVs and CNG vehicles are scaling rapidly, hybrids are gaining ground, petrol remains dominant, and diesel continues to serve SUVs and high running needs. JSW MG Motor India has added plug in hybrids to the mix, while Mahindra, Tata Motors, Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Renault are preparing for multiple outcomes.

The industry’s long term goal remains zero emission mobility, yet internal combustion engines still have a long road ahead. Customer needs, infrastructure gaps and affordability pressures mean the transition will move at different speeds across regions and segments. Flexible architectures, such as JSW MG’s ADAPT platform, allow carmakers to support electric, hybrid, plug in hybrid, range extender and conventional powertrains, cutting costs and shortening product cycles.

Plug in hybrids promise efficiency gains but face higher costs and no tax benefits in India. The economics of flexibility depend on scale, localisation and supplier readiness. Upcoming CAFE norms, bank funding, Tata Motors’ Sierra EV, Ashok Leyland’s gearbox strategy and geopolitical tensions will further shape technology choices and pricing.

The move towards multiple powertrains does not weaken the zero emission goal. It reflects India’s diverse realities — balancing emissions reduction with affordability while giving customers freedom to choose the technology that works best for them.
