The second edition of the Autocar Professional Automotive Yearbook was released on Tuesday at the 8th Auto Retail Conclave organised by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Autocar India Editor Hormazd Sorabjee and Autocar Professional Editor Ketan Thakkar presented the Yearbook to the dignitaries attending the conclave.

The inaugural edition, released last year, was well received by the automotive industry. Building on that foundation, the 2026 edition goes beyond sales volumes and market shares to examine the factors that shaped company performance and altered the competitive order.

FY2025-26 ended with record passenger vehicle sales of 4.74 million units, an increase of 8.2 percent. SUV sales rose 11.3 percent to 2.66 million units, increasing their share of the market to 56 percent.

The year also saw a significant change in industry rankings. Mahindra moved into second place, Tata Motors rose to third and Hyundai slipped from second to fourth. Maruti Suzuki retained its leadership, although it grew at a slower pace than the overall market.

The Yearbook assesses every major passenger vehicle manufacturer across products, volumes, market share, capacity, exports and financial performance. Each company profile includes a SWOT analysis and Autocar Professional’s assessment of the road ahead.

A major focus of the edition is the changing powertrain mix. CNG and electric vehicles together contributed nearly four-fifths of the industry’s incremental volumes, while electric passenger vehicle sales nearly doubled to 2.36 lakh units. The Yearbook also examines the wider acceptance of hybrids and the continuing relevance of diesel in larger SUVs.

A dedicated electric vehicle section reviews the expansion of the market, new product launches and changing customer preferences, including the growing demand for larger battery packs and higher-specification variants.

The Yearbook combines the reporting and editorial experience of the Autocar Professional team with industry analysis from JATO Dynamics, financial analysis from CRISIL Intelligence, powertrain insights from ElecTree and Ankush Gugnani, and product portfolio assessments by Niranjan Prabhu of CarGraphical.

Designed as a reference for industry leaders, dealers, policymakers, analysts and researchers, the second edition seeks to explain why the market moved the way it did and identify the factors likely to shape its next phase.
