Ather’s ₹99,999 Konarc Takes Aim at Petrol Scooter Heartland

Four range options, a scalable platform and a wider push across charging, battery life, servicing and resale underpin Ather’s biggest mainstream bet.

Ather’s ₹99,999 Konarc Takes Aim at Petrol Scooter Heartland

Ather Energy is making its most aggressive move into India’s mainstream scooter market with the Konarc, an electric scooter priced from ₹99,999, ex-showroom, and offering IDC-certified range options extending up to 200km.

The first production model based on the company’s EL platform, the Konarc takes Ather beyond the premium end of the electric scooter market and into direct competition with mass-market petrol and electric models.

The scooter will be offered across S and Z lines. The 100km Konarc S is priced at ₹99,999, while the 125km and 161km versions cost ₹1,21,999 and ₹1,44,999, respectively. Prices for the 200km S and the two Z variants have not been announced. 

The rollout will be staggered. Deliveries will begin with selected S variants from September 21, followed by the 100km version in the first quarter of 2027. The Z line is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, while the 200km S will follow in the third quarter. 

The entry price is only one part of the pitch. Ather is backing the Konarc with longer service intervals, a 10-year battery warranty, new residential charging infrastructure and a digital system intended to bring greater transparency to used-electric-scooter valuations.

“Today, one in four scooter buyers is buying electric and that’s a phenomenal amount of progress. We’ve almost doubled this number in the last one year,” Ather Energy co-founder and chief executive Tarun Mehta said.

The larger opportunity lies with the remaining buyers. “When you go out and talk to these customers, you realise they’re not saying no to electric. They’re kind of saying, ‘not yet’,” he added.

A Wider Sweep of the Market
The four range options allow Ather to address different customer requirements through one model. The 100km and 125km versions are suited to regular urban use, while the 161km and 200km variants cater to longer journeys and buyers who cannot charge frequently.

The 200km version will have the longest claimed range in Ather’s portfolio. The EL platform has been developed to support more products and battery configurations. Sharing components and manufacturing processes across these models should help Ather contain development costs and shorten launch cycles as it seeks higher volumes.

Mehta said the EL platform had been developed around safety, serviceability and scale, with enough flexibility to support multiple products.

The Konarc retains the technology focus associated with Ather but incorporates features familiar to conventional scooter buyers. It gets a 14-inch front wheel, a 1,352mm wheelbase, longer rear suspension, front disc brake and combined braking system as standard. It also offers an adjustable pillion backrest, a centre stand and metal body panels.

The metal body reflects a change in Ather’s earlier thinking. Mehta has previously questioned its functional value, but customer feedback showed that many buyers associate metal panels with durability and familiarity. “I still believe that you don’t need a metal body,” Mehta said. “But when we started talking to more customers, we realised that for a lot of people, metal body is not just about functionality. It conveys a sense of confidence. It conveys a sense of familiarity in the product.” “I may feel that you don’t need it, but it does look like you want it,” he added.

The Konarc will also introduce Ather’s Advanced Electronic Braking System. The company says the locally developed system combines mechanical and electronic braking to provide up to 20% higher peak braking force, shorten stopping distances and reduce the risk of rear-wheel lock-up.

Fewer Workshop Visits
The Konarc will have a service interval of one year or 10,000km, compared with around 5,000km for a typical scooter. 

Its EL architecture has fewer service checkpoints and provides easier access to major components. Ather says this could reduce workshop time by nearly half, helping its service network support more vehicles as sales expand.

The company has also introduced its Bedrock battery package with a warranty of 10 years or 100,000km, whichever comes first. It includes a minimum 70% state-of-health assurance, coverage against defects and failures, and protection during extended periods of inactivity.

Ather expects the improved cell-balancing hardware to increase battery life from 80,000-100,000km to around 120,000km. Bedrock batteries are being extended across the 450, Rizta and EL-platform ranges. The longer warranty addresses a key concern among first-time EV buyers: the durability of the battery and the cost of replacing it.

Apartment Charging Moves into Focus
Konarc owners will have access to Ather’s network of around 6,000 public fast chargers. The company, however, sees residential complexes emerging as the next charging bottleneck. “The question no longer is, ‘Will I get stranded?’ You probably won’t get stranded,” Mehta said. “The question increasingly is, ‘I have too many people in my building that now have an electric vehicle. How do we charge in my building?’”

AtherNode, its new residential charging system, uses a building’s common electricity supply to serve individual parking spaces. It manages the available load, queues vehicles and generates separate bills for residents. This could allow housing societies to add more charging points without immediately upgrading their transformers.

Ather plans to introduce the system in six cities from December, beginning with Bengaluru.

The Konarc itself gets a 450W onboard charger and supports combined charging. Pairing the onboard unit with another 450W charger can provide a total output of 900W. 

Ather has introduced True Health, a digital report covering the battery, motor, charger, dashboard, service history and wear components. The feature is now available through the Ather application for eligible scooters more than three years old. Owners can view the condition of major components, the battery’s state of health and an estimated resale value.

“We believe the second-hand market, the resale market, is extremely broken,” Mehta said. “We believe it is stacked against you as a good driver. It is stacked against you as the owner of a very well-engineered machine.”

Used electric scooters are often valued mainly on age and kilometres travelled, with limited visibility into battery condition. A verified health report could give buyers and sellers a better basis for arriving at a price.

Ather is not launching a used-vehicle business at this stage, but the data could eventually support a certified resale programme.

The Konarc gives Ather its broadest shot yet at India’s mass scooter market. Its sub-₹1 lakh entry price, wide range spread and lower servicing burden address some of the advantages that petrol scooters continue to hold.

The starting variant must still offer enough usable range and equipment to attract value-conscious buyers. The 161km model already reaches ₹1.45 lakh, while the prices of the 200km version and the Z line remain unknown.

Ather will also need sufficient production, retail and service capacity to support a larger and more geographically dispersed customer base. The Konarc gives it an opening into the scooter heartland; converting that into scale will be the harder part.
