Ashok Leyland Signs Sponsorship Deal with Chennai Super Kings
The partnership, which extends the Hinduja Group's 15-year association with CSK, will place the Ashok Leyland logo on the team's jersey for the upcoming IPL season.
Ashok Leyland, India's second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and the Indian flagship of the Hinduja Group, has entered into a sponsorship agreement with the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Under the deal, the Ashok Leyland logo will appear on the front right chest of CSK's yellow jersey during the upcoming season, marking the company's first direct sponsorship of the franchise.
The partnership was announced on March 6 at Ashok Leyland's headquarters in Chennai. Present at the event were Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Ashok Leyland, and Shenu Agarwal, the company's Managing Director and CEO, alongside CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre, who captained India's Under-19 side to World Cup victory earlier this year. The occasion also served as the official unveiling of CSK's new jersey for the season, bringing together representatives from sport, industry, and the wider Chennai community.
As part of the announcement, Ashok Leyland introduced a CSK-branded fan bus, designed exclusively for the team's supporter base, known by their rally call, Whistle Podu. The vehicle is intended to reflect the company's core business of passenger and goods transport while drawing a visible connection to the cricket franchise and its following.
The deal is not the first point of contact between CSK and the Hinduja Group. Gulf Oil, a group company, has maintained a partnership with the franchise for over 15 years, making it one of the longer-standing commercial relationships in IPL history. Ashok Leyland's entry as an official sponsor signals a broader strategic intent from the conglomerate to deepen its visibility within the sport at a time when IPL viewership and on-ground attendance continue to grow.
CSK is among the most recognised franchises in IPL history. Founded in 2008 as one of the league's original eight teams, the side has won the title five times and has consistently ranked among the top franchises in terms of fan engagement and commercial value. The team is based in Chennai and plays its home matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, one of India's oldest and largest cricket venues.
Ashok Leyland has its own deep ties to the city. Founded in 1948 — originally as Ashok Motors — the company went on to become one of India's primary manufacturers of commercial vehicles, producing trucks, buses, defence vehicles, and light commercial vehicles. It employs tens of thousands of people across its manufacturing plants in Tamil Nadu and other states. The Hinduja Group acquired a controlling stake in the company in the 1980s, and it has since grown into a significant player in both domestic and export markets.
The sponsorship reflects a broader trend of Indian industrial and manufacturing companies increasing their presence in cricket, a sport that commands some of the highest advertising rates and viewership numbers in the country. IPL franchises have in recent years drawn sponsors from sectors ranging from fintech and edtech to real estate and automotive.
Dheeraj Hinduja said the partnership reflected shared values between the two organisations, pointing to CSK's record of consistency as a basis for the association. KS Viswanathan, Managing Director of Chennai Super Kings, described Ashok Leyland as a brand with roots in the city that aligned with the franchise's identity and journey. Shenu Agarwal said the sponsorship was intended to build emotional connections with consumers and go beyond conventional brand visibility, framing the deal as participation in a broader cultural moment rather than a straightforward advertising placement. Financial terms of the sponsorship were not disclosed by either party.
