Ashok Leyland domestic sales drop 4% in November, bus sales strong

The company’s sales performance for November 2024 showed a mix of growth and declines across different segments.

Ashok Leyland, one of India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, has reported total domestic sales of 12,473 units in November, a 4% drop from November 2023’s figure of 13,031 units. Cumulatively, domestic sales for the financial year so far stand at 110,413 units, reflecting a 4% decline compared to the 114,842 units sold during the same period in 2023.

In the Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV) category, truck sales within India experienced a slight 2% dip, with 6,609 units sold compared to 6,755 units in November 2023. Cumulatively, M&HCV truck sales fell by a significant 10% year-on-year, from 61,888 units to 55,472 units. Conversely, the M&HCV bus segment displayed robust growth, with sales jumping 33% to 1,304 units in November 2024 from 982 units a year ago. The cumulative sales in this category also surged 35%, rising from 9,493 to 12,777 units.

The Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment showed a contrasting trend. Domestic sales dropped by 14% in November 2024, with 4,560 units sold compared to 5,294 units in November 2023. Year-to-date, this category saw a modest 3% decline, from 43,461 units last year to 42,164 units this year.

In combined domestic and export performance, Ashok Leyland saw an 8% growth in total M&HCV sales for November 2024, with 9,176 units compared to 8,500 in November 2023. Notably, exports contributed to a 3% increase in M&HCV truck sales, reaching 7,149 units. The M&HCV bus category continued to grow internationally, achieving a 29% rise in sales for the month and a 24% cumulative growth over the year. Meanwhile, total LCV sales across domestic and export markets declined by 11% in November, with 4,961 units sold, and the cumulative figure fell by 2% year-on-year.

Despite some declines, Ashok Leyland’s focus on strengthening its bus segment and international market presence delivered positive outcomes. The company’s domestic and export vehicle sales for November 2024 totaled 14,137 units, marking a modest 1% increase from 14,053 units in the same period last year. Cumulatively, sales for the financial year thus far stand at 118,964 units, representing a 3% drop from the previous year’s 122,092 units.
