AM/NS India Becomes First Integrated Steel Producer to Secure Green Steel Certification

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the first integrated steel producer in India to receive Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel's newly introduced Green Steel Taxonomy, the company announced on February 5, 2026.

The certification, awarded by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST), recognises AM/NS India's Hot Rolled coils and sheets with a four-star rating and Cold Rolled coils and sheets with a three-star rating. These products serve critical sectors including automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment, and consumer durables.

The certification enables automotive manufacturers to reduce Scope 3 emissions across their value chains by sourcing government-verified green steel. The automotive sector currently accounts for 17-18% of AM/NS India's revenue.

Eligibility for certification requires emissions intensity below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel. Steel meeting this threshold is rated on a three-tier system: three-star, four-star, or five-star. AM/NS India achieved 14% lower CO₂ emissions intensity compared to the national average in FY25.

Lower-carbon Production Pathway

The company's lower-carbon production profile stems from approximately 65% of its steelmaking capacity being based on the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) route using natural gas, which has enabled an over 35% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions intensity since 2015.

"India's Green Steel Taxonomy sets a clear direction for the future of the steel industry and its decarbonisation," said Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India. "The certification reflects our progress in this journey, underpinned by focused investments in low-carbon processes and clean energy."

AM/NS India's emissions performance is supported by renewable energy integration, including power from approximately 1 GW hybrid renewable energy project in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, developed by AM Green Energy. The project began supplying clean power to the company's flagship Hazira plant in Gujarat in 2025.

In December 2025, ArcelorMittal announced plans to invest approximately $0.9 billion in three additional renewable energy projects in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Upon completion, these projects will double ArcelorMittal's renewable energy capacity in India to 2 GW.

AM/NS India is also developing its own 550-MW hybrid renewable energy project in Bhachau, Gujarat, comprising 300 MW of solar power and 250 MW of wind power, with estimated annual CO₂ savings of 0.9 million tonnes.

Expansion Plans

By 2027, the company expects 70% of its production to be classified as green steel, according to Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The company has commenced commercial production of four-star-rated HR products and three-star-rated CR products, offering domestic customers a government-verified green steel alternative.

India's flat steel demand in automotive manufacturing currently stands at 7.8 million tonnes annually, growing 6-7% each year. The Indian hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel market is projected to reach $270.5 billion by 2030, up from $171.1 billion in 2024.
