Agratas Hits Key Construction Milestone at Sanand Battery Facility Ahead of 2027 Production
The Tata Group's battery unit has finished the main structural frame at its Gujarat facility, which will have a 20 GWh annual capacity in its first phase.
Agratas, the Tata Group's global battery business, has completed the steel frame at its battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a significant construction milestone as the company works toward beginning production in 2027.
The completed structure spans 700 metres in length and 150 metres in width, rising to 34 metres at its peak and covering a built-up area of 105,000 square metres. The main structure required over 24,000 tonnes of steel, with more than 2,500 workers on-site at peak construction. The project is being executed by Tata Projects Limited, alongside Tata Consulting Engineers, with steel and the majority of other materials sourced domestically from across India.
Once operational, the Sanand facility will produce advanced battery cells for electric vehicles and energy storage applications, with a planned first-phase annual capacity of 20 GWh. The company has positioned the facility as central to India's broader clean energy ambitions, including the country's targets of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.
The project is also expected to create substantial regional employment across production, operations, engineering, maintenance, and quality assurance roles, with Agratas committing to local workforce development programs.
Agratas is simultaneously developing a second battery manufacturing facility in Bridgwater, UK, as part of its global industrialisation strategy.
