Abu Dhabi Mobility has commenced its first pilot programme for autonomous delivery vehicles, representing a major advancement in the emirate's smart mobility initiatives. The trial operation, launched under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) in partnership with Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), includes the issuance of the emirate's first official license plate for a self-driving delivery vehicle.
Abu Dhabi Mobility is overseeing the programme in collaboration with K2 and EMX, the logistics division of 7X. The autonomous vehicles, developed by K2 subsidiary Autogo, utilize advanced artificial intelligence and smart mobility technologies to navigate urban environments and complete deliveries without human intervention.
Masdar City serves as the initial testing ground for these vehicles, with operations expected to expand across Abu Dhabi in the coming months. The initiative aligns with the emirate's strategic vision for smart mobility, which targets 25 percent of all trips to be conducted using smart transport solutions by 2040.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Mobility, described the pilot as "a pivotal milestone in Abu Dhabi's journey towards building a smart, sustainable transport system." He emphasized that the project demonstrates the emirate's commitment to implementing global solutions within a comprehensive regulatory framework.
Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, highlighted the strategic importance of integrating autonomous delivery vehicles into Abu Dhabi's regulatory structure. He noted that the company remains committed to developing logistics solutions that are "faster, safer, more adaptable, and more sustainable."
The autonomous delivery vehicles are designed to support sustainability objectives by reducing urban congestion and carbon emissions while improving customer experiences. The technology represents a significant step forward in smart logistics capabilities for the region.
Following successful regulatory approval, Autogo plans to expand operations beyond Masdar City through partnerships with additional stakeholders. Full-scale commercial deployment is anticipated within the coming months as the company seeks to cover broader public areas.
This development forms part of the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster's strategic vision, which focuses on developing intelligent infrastructure and localizing the production of autonomous systems within Abu Dhabi. The initiative builds upon previous smart mobility successes, including the introduction of autonomous taxis in key city areas.
The pilot programme represents a collaborative effort between public and private sectors to advance urban mobility solutions and strengthen Abu Dhabi's position as a leader in smart transport innovation and technology implementation.
