Tata Motors launches Tiago AMT, looks to accelerate sales

Tata Motors is looking to further drive up sales of its popular hatchback, the Tiago.

The company today launched the Tiago equipped with an automated manual transmission (Easy-Shift AMT). Priced at Rs 5.73 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), the Tiago AMT is available in the XZA variant with the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine, in nearly 600 Tata Motors sales outlets across the country.

According to Mayank Pareek, president, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, “Due to the continued good response to the Tiago, we are witnessing a month-on-month growth in the immensely competitive hatchback segment. The Tiago has been instrumental in the growth of Tata Motors’ brand across the passenger vehicle market. We are confident the Tiago AMT will further expand the market for us.”

The Tiago AMT comes with the same 1.2-litre petrol motor good for 85hp and 114Nm of torque. There is no diesel-powered model on offer. The Tiago's AMT gearbox is a five-speed unit which also offers Sport mode and ‘creep’ function. It also offers a City mode which is similar to its manual gearbox-equipped counterpart. Like most other AMT gearbox cars sold in India, drivers will also be able to change gears manually if required.

While available only in the top trim for now, Tata will offer the AMT gearbox in lower variants in the future.

The Maruti Celerio AMT is the only direct rival to the Tiago AMT in the segment and is available in a choice of trim levels, with the top trim also cheaper than the Tiago’s by around Rs 14,000.

The carmaker is also preparing to launch its all-new Tiago-based compact sedan, the Tigor, soon. The car will share its mechanicals with the Tiago and, thus, could also receive the AMT gearbox option.
