Tata AutoComp Prestolite Electric rides demand for EVs, sells over 100,000 e-drives

The Tata Group company’s joint venture with Prestolite Electric sees growing demand for its electric drives, reflective of the accelerating shift towards sustainable transportation in India and globally.

The Indian automotive component industry, in tandem with vehicle manufacturers, is benefitting from the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in India and also overseas. Tata Prestolite Electric has announced that it has registered cumualtive sales of 100,000 electric drives and counting.   

In January 2020, Tata AutoComp, which provides products and services to the Indian and global automotive OEMs as well as Tier 1 suppliers, had entered into a joint venture agreement with Prestolite Electric of China to design, manufacture, supply and service electric drivetrain solutions. Forty-seven months later, on November 14, 2023, the Tata Prestolite Electric joint venture announced that its first major sales milestone of 100,000 electric drives, which is reflective of the accelerating shift towards sustainable transportation. Total EV sales in India have crossed the 3-million mark, of which nearly 2.60 million units have been sold in the past three years.

TACO Presolite Electric, which caters to all segments of the electric vehicle industry encompassing two- and three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and buses, has clearly benefited from the growing demand for EVs in India particularly for two- and three-wheelers which account for an over 90% share of the India EV market. 

Prestolite Electric, which is owned by the Broad Ocean Motor Group, China which also owns Shanghai E-Drive Solutions, has access to technologies for various powertrain products including motors, controllers as well as integrated drivetrain (integrated motor, inverter and transmission).

Tata AutoComp’s offering for the EV segment includes motors, controllers, integrated drivetrain (integrated motor, inverter and reducer), battery pack, BMS, battery thermal management system, batter cooling plates, inverter cooling modules, chillers, e- compressors, radiators as well as EV chargers required to charge the EVs.
