Mumbai, January 27, 2014: A week ago, Autocar Professional first broke the news about Suzuki Motorcycle India (SMIL) planning to launch an all-new 110cc automatic scooter. Today, the company officially launched the new scooter named ‘Lets’. A new single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, 110cc engine powers the new scooter model, which aims to give a boost to the company’s stagnant sales.
Besides unveiling the product today, SMIL has kept the curiosity alive around the price point for the scooter and will announce the ex-showroom price range of this model at the Auto Expo which opens next week. The Lets model will go on sale from February 2014 and the company plans to offer the model in five colour options – white, red, blue, black and silver.
An industry insider had recently told Autocar Professional that “Suzuki has been developing a 110cc scooter engine for some time and it is in a production-ready stage currently.” The Lets scooter model marks SMIL’s entry into the 110cc scooter category as its other existing models – the Suzuki Access and Suzuki Swish scooters – both use the same 125cc engine.
However, the surprise element today was SMIL unveiling a near-ready motorcycle model named Gixxer, which is powered by a single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, 150cc engine. While the company will display this model at the Expo, it will launch this motorcycle around May 2014 and is expected to go on sale in July later this year. Though not many details of this motorcycle are disclosed as of now, a premium feature in the form of monoshock rear suspension has been introduced in this model. The only other 150cc motorcycle currently sold by SMIL, GS150R does not offer this feature.
SMIL is making visible efforts to expand its product portfolio and reach in order to consolidate its position in the Indian two wheeler arena.
