Suzuki christens its iK2 concept the Baleno
India-bound new Suzuki (YRA) hatchback to debut at Frankfurt Motor Show 2015.
Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that the production version of the ik-2 concept hatchback shown at the Geneva Motor Show 2015 will be called Suzuki Baleno internationally. The carmaker has also released a first official picture of the new Suzuki Baleno hatchback.
This new hatchback (Codename: YRA) will also be sold in India and is expected to be slotted above the Swift in Suzuki’s global line-up. However, the Indian version is unlikely to be called Baleno as it was a sedan sold here which failed to make a mark. Maruti has ditched not just the Baleno but also the SX4 name which was its successor and also didn’t do too well in the Indian market.
The new Suzuki Baleno will be the first model globally that will feature Suzuki’s new Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine. This engine will make its debut in the Indian car as well.
The new Suzuki hatchback is based on a new-generation platform which will underpin more new models from Suzuki. Suzuki is also working on a ‘crossover’ version of the Baleno hatchback. However, it remains to be seen if that model comes to India. Direct competitors of the new Suzuki Baleno include the Hyundai i20 and the new Honda Jazz to name a few.
Expect Maruti to showcase this new hatchback at the upcoming Auto Expo 2016 early next year. The carmaker is also readying an all-new compact SUV for India (codenamed YBA) which is also expected to make its debut soon.
