Production at Shriram Pistons & Rings’ (SPR) Alwar plant in Rajasthan has been hit due to a worker strike. It is understood that the workers at the plant are looking to form a union, a move which is being resisted by the company management.
According to a report in The Hindu, worker strife at the plant has been underway since over a week. SPR is one of India’s largest integrated manufacturers of pistons, pins, rings and engine valves. If the strike continues, it is likely that the company’s supplies to OEMs will be hit.
The company, which also has another manufacturing plant at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, is a major supplier to carmakers (Ford India, GM India, Honda Cars India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Nissan Motor India, Tata Motors), two-wheeler OEMs (Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Suzuki Motorcycle India, TVS Motor Co), commercial vehicle players (Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, SML Isuzu, Tata Motors, VE Commercial Vehicles), engine makers (Suzuki Powertrain, Tata Cummins) and tractor manufacturers (Mahindra Tractors, New Holland, Sonalika International, TAFE).
SPR also exports its products to Ford (UK, Germany, Australia, South Africa), Honda (USA, China, Thailand), Renault (France, Spain), Iveco (Italy), Hyundai (Korea).
