The KUV100 at Mumbai airport is an attention grabber. M&M is targeting sales of 80,000-90,000 units annually.

Customer bookings for Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) recently launched KUV100 SUV have crossed the 21,000 mark, with half of them for the petrol-engined variant. Launched on January 15, the vehicle has received 175,000 enquiries.

Designed and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, the sub-4-metre KUV100 fits more in the premium hatchback segment than in the compact SUV segment, largely due to its smart pricing strategy. The KUV100 goes up against established hatchbacks such as the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Swift, which consistently clock sales of more than 10,000 units a month. What seems to be working in favour of the KUV100 is its distinct crossover design and highly competitive price-tag.

The KUV100 has seven variants on offer, starting with the base K2, going up to K2+, K4, K4+,K6, K6+ and the top-spec K8. Prices for the petrol variant start at Rs 4.42 lakh and go up to Rs 5.91 lakh for the top-spec petrol variant. The base diesel is priced at Rs 5.22 lakh, going up to Rs 6.76 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune).

M&M says both its petrol 1.2-litre, 82bhp mFalcon G80-engined KUV100 and 1.2-litre, 77bhp mFalcon D75 diesel variant have received a good market response. Almost half of the bookings have been received for the petrol variant.

Speaking on KUV100 bookings, Pravin Shah, president and chief executive (Automotive), M&M, said, “We are delighted with the number of KUV100 bookings received within just a month of its launch. The large number of enquiries and over 21,000 bookings reaffirm the immense popularity KUV100 has garnered in such short time. With the KUV100, we have pushed the boundaries to create a new segment of SUVs as a superior alternative to compact cars and that has resonated well with our customers. What is also very encouraging is that almost half of our bookings are for the KUV100 petrol variant.”
