Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd (MEML), the last-mile mobility arm of the Mahindra Group, has announced that it has recorded its 50,000th electric three-wheeler customers milestone this month. As per Autocar Professional’s industry sales analytics, it is estimated that the last 40,000 units’ sales have come in the past three years and three months (see data table below). The first 5,000-unit sales had been clocked in October 2020.
From FY2020 through to Q1 FY2023, a total of 39,257 Mahindra e-three-wheelers have been sold.
The 50,000-unit milestone would possibly have been crossed much earlier if it weren’t for the sales-speedbreaker that the Covid-19 pandemic proved to be. Growing demand for wallet-friendly passenger-carrying and cargo-ferrying mobility in three-wheelers saw Mahindra Electric sell 13,589 units in FY2020, which dropped to 5,376 units a year later due to the countrywide lockdowns and then rise smartly again to 16,862 in FY2022. In the first quarter of the ongoing FY2023, a total of 3,430 units have been sold as per SIAM industry wholesales data.
Making a difference
Mahindra Electric’s first three-wheeler was the e-Alfa Mini launched on September 8, 2017 at a price of Rs 112,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). The e-auto, with four-plus-one seating capacity, was targeted at last-mile connectivity and intra-city people movement applications.

Six months later, at the Auto Expo 2018 in New Delhi, Mahindra Electric revealed the Treo, its low maintenance Li-thium ion battery powered three-wheeler aimed to promote mass adoption of electric vehicles in India. The Treo Zor was launched on October 29, 2020, two years after the passenger-carrying Treo, priced at Rs 273,000 (ex-showroom Delhi, net of FAME 2 and state subsidies). They were followed by the Treo Yaari and more recently the e-Alfa Cargo.
The Treo range is powered by advanced lithium-ion battery technology with a life of over 150,000 kilometres. The new Treo develops maximum power of 8kW and peak torque of 42 Nm. It also comes with the longest wheelbase in its segment. The electric three-wheeler provides the highest gradeablity of 12.7 degrees in the segment. It comes with a standard warranty of 3 years/ 80,000km, along with the option of an extended warranty of 2 years/ 100,000km.

From the environment point of view, Mahindra Electric’s three-wheelers have covered more than 133 million electric kilometres, and prevented 27,566 metric tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere.
Given the growing demand for three-wheeled electric mobility across the country, for both passenger and cargo applications, particularly in view of last-mile applications, Mahindra Electric clearly will be looking to capitalise on the green opportunity.
