Mahindra Electric has expanded its e2o electric vehicle range by adding the new e2o Plus.

The Mahindra e2o Plus gets a four-door layout as opposed to the standard two-door e2o. The e2o Plus range is priced from Rs 5.46 lakh going up to Rs 8.46 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The price includes all government incentives.

On a full charge, the zero-emission car can travel for upto 140 kilometres and reach a top speed of 85kph.

Speaking at the launch in New Delhi today, Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director, Mahindra & Mahindra, “As the pioneer in integrated and electric mobility solutions in India, it has always been our endeavour to make electric vehicles more accessible across segments. The launch of the e2o Plus is a defining moment in the electric mobility journey of Mahindra as it mark our foray into the mass-market electric city car segment."

The e2o Plus is longer (by 310mm), wider (by 61mm) and taller (by 25mm). More importantly, it gets a 300mm longer wheelbase that translates to a surprising amount of room in the cabin. Up front, the e2o Plus sports an all-new grille to bring it in line with other Mahindra cars – flanked by the same projector headlights as the two-door e2o.

Viewed side-on, the car has a slightly different glasshouse; the unique kink in the window line has been moved from after the C-pillar to before it. At the back, there is the new roof-mounted spoiler and vertically stacked LED tail-lights, as opposed to the two-door e2o’s horizontal conventional units. On the inside, there’s space for four with the practicality of four doors now. The small 135-litre boot is good enough for two small bags. On the equipment side, the e2o Plus gets a Blaupunkt infotainment system, all four power windows and keyless go as standard.

The top-spec e2o Plus is powered by a 72V battery back, which extends the car’s claimed range to 140km. The battery powers a motor with a peak output of 41hp at 3,500rpm and 91Nm at 2,500rpm. It gets a standard direct drive transmission just like the two-door sibling.
Mahindra claims the e2o’s range in this Plus variant has been extended to 140km as opposed to 110km earlier. But the downside to this is that the battery charging time has now shot up to nine hours as opposed to five hours earlier. Mahindra offers a fast-charger option that can charge the battery to 90 percent in 90 minutes. This option is priced at a whopping Rs 6 lakh extra over the cost of the car.

The four-door e2o Plus is a step in the right direction by Mahindra to increase the car’s appeal for buyers who are looking for a practical four-door EV for city use. However, the high sticker price and the inability to use the green car for long-distance travel are dampeners.
