The launch of the XUV400 is a milestone moment in M&M's EV journey

The launch of the XUV400 at the Mahindra Research Valley on the eve of World EV Day was special as Mahindra & Mahindra also announced their plans to introduce more products in the 4000 to 4200 mm space.

These comments were made by Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director, Auto & Farm Sectors at Mahindra Group who said the company intends to “do more work on this platform and within this, more platforms will evolve".

Speaking at the launch, Jejurikar reiterated that the XUV400 will be "a category creator" as overall EV penetration is very low within the SUV space, with its game-changing range of 456kms, under 50 minutes of DC fast charging, and acceleration of 0-60 in less than 4.3 seconds. Powering the Mahindra XUV400 is an IP 67 compliant 39.5 kWh battery pack and PSM motor, cumulatively churning out a peak power of 149.5 PS and a max torque of 310 Nm.  The XUV400 can attain a top speed of 150 kmph.

"The product will appeal to people who want to make a powerful expression live to the fullest with fun and adventure as their second nature but also care for the climate,” he said.

M&M, as part of its commitment to the development of the EV ecosystem also confirmed the signing of MOUs with three charging infrastructure providers that will operate at three levels. These levels include developing charging infrastructure in residential areas, within the dealerships, and also with independent third-party charging network providers.

While the XUV400’s price will be announced in January 2023, Jejurikar only said that "like the Scorpio N, the XUV400  pricing will also become a talking point". He said test drives will begin in December and products will be rolled out of the company's Nashik plant by the end of January 2023 with the price also being announced by the first week of the month, after which bookings will begin.

Rollout plan

As part of the product rollout, Phase 1 of the XUV400 launch will cover the following 16 cities viz. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Surat, Nagpur, Trivandrum, Nashik, Chandigarh, Kochi, and Goa, and  then the vehicle will be rolled out pan India

Targeted at the C-segment,  the SUV 400 e-SUV has been built in collaboration with global partners from South Korea, the XUV400 leverages its strengths across various segments – an advanced tech eco-system for speed and expertise – including calibration, system integration, and vehicle validation. The XUV400 comes equipped with high-precision microcontrollers for critical parts such as smart vehicle control unit and battery management systems with the highest level of safety compliance according to global standards.

R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Technology and Product Development, M&M sharing details on the product development stated that the XUV400 was a completely indigenous effort with external help taken from global European consultants and leveraging Mahindra’s R&D capability with teams spread across Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai.

"We have tested the vehicle globally under extreme weather conditions along with testing of its fast-charging compatibility (CCS) in multiple geographies to ensure a seamless experience for our customers."

Chief Design Officer Pratap Bose said the XUV400 will be the first car from the M&M family to have the electrified twin peaks logo. "Every mm of the SUV is a proper Mahindra SUV. From a design perspective, the company has blanked off the front and the lower grill to signify that customer has arrived in life. The dual tone glass copper roof, and infinity body colour is unique to the XUV 400 as we have got the best from engineering, technology, brand, and design," he reiterated
