Nidec Corporation of Japan, which is a supplier of precision motors (brushless / brush DC motors, AC motors, fans, blowers, and electronic and other components) for automotive applications, is all set to launch its Indian production operations in April 2015.

The company’s Indian arm, Nidec India, which was established in December 2010 in Gurgaon, is known to have been building a local manufacturing plant in Neemrana, Rajasthan, and the construction work is said to be in its final stages.

Two sources closely associated with this development have confirmed the same to Autocar Professional. While the total investment committed by the company in this project is expected to be close to US$ 100 million (Rs 630 crore), the upcoming plant, as sources say, will provide employment to nearly 1500 people under its first phase.

The company, under its first phase of operations, will see a facility built-up area of 15,820 square metres out of the total site area of 121,410 square metres allotted by Rajasthan to the Japanese company. The first phase will see commencement of local production of products under its automotive motor and electronic control business unit.

Under phase two, the facility may see future expansion on the same scale. The planned local production is said to not only help the company consolidate its presence in India, but is also in line with the Make-in-India programme. “Along with expanding its current customer portfolio in India, Nidec is also considering other regions like the Middle East through its manufacturing facility close to the national capital,” disclosed a source.

The company’s portfolio of precision motors comes with applications across various components in a passenger car such as sunroof, seat adjusters, ABS, electronic power steering, engine cooler, dual clutch transmission, engine oil pump and others. Besides being a known name in producing motors for various applications, the company also has a relatively new portfolio of comprehensive motors that offer applications in areas such as wiper, power windows, integrated starter and alternators. Nidec is also said to be developing motors for next-generation vehicle technologies.

According to one of the presentations on the automotive motor portfolio, Nidec Corp had stated that its sees a huge market demand for compact brushed motors (primarily in North American and Chinese markets) and brushless engine cooling fan systems (North America and Europe).
