Hyundai Motor Company had shown interest in developing a contender for the MPV segment way back in 2012, after the reveal of its Hexa Space concept. In July 2015, the carmaker confirmed that it was developing a new MPV to take on the likes of the Honda Mobilio and the popular Maruti Ertiga. However, at the Auto Expo 2016, there was no display of an MPV, but instead Hyundai brought in the Carlino small SUV (HND-14) concept.

The MPV market seems to have had its moment in the sun with the sales of models like Mobilio and Lodgy slowing down, and market leader Ertiga being affected too. The demand has now shifted to the compact SUV space with models like Hyundai’s own Creta, the Maruti Vitara Brezza and even models like the Kwid and KUV100, all showing strong sales potential. Company sources have told our sister publication, Autocar India, that the carmaker has decided to put its plans for a MPV on the back burner, and focus on developing a compact SUV.

The model will be based on the Carlino concept and will be slotted below the Creta in the Indian market. The concept featured a chunky design with a large glasshouse and many non-typical Hyundai styling cues which may point at a future design language from the carmaker.

Hyundai did not reveal much information at the Auto Expo, but did confirm that the new concept was a sub-4-metre model, which means the production car will take on the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport.

This compact SUV is still some time away but with the segment steaming up and the success of the Vitara Brezza, Hyundai is sure to put this project on a fast track.
