India's No. 2 carmaker in India by sales volumes, Hyundai Motor India today reported cumulative wholesale numbers of 12,583 units in the month of May, out of which domestic sales comprise 6,883 units and exports at 5,700 units.
The Korean carmaker also claimed having received up to 15,000 new bookings through its showrooms and online retail platform – Hyundai Click to Buy.
While it resumed operations at its two plants in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on May 8, the company is presently functioning with over 850 showrooms and 1,000 workshops also being back in operations across the country and dealing directly with customers on the ground.
The company said it delivered 11,000 cars last month to customers as various parts of the country started opening up gradually after the complete lock-down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Tarun Garg, director - Sales, Marketing and Service - Hyundai Motor India, “In an extremely challenging market environment, HMIL made a beginning towards normalcy by registering cumulative sales of 12,583 units in May 2020. This performance was made possible on account of strong customer interest and demand pull generated by trendsetter brands like the all-new Creta, new Verna, Venue, Elite i20 and Grand i10 Nios. We have prepared ourselves to welcome our customers back in this ‘new normal’ while ensuring adherence to safety guidelines at our showrooms and workshops and expedite economic recovery.”
New Creta gets 24,000 bookings
While the company had launched the all-new Creta on March 16 just before announcement of the nation-wide lock-down, Hyundai Motor India also launched the facelifted Verna last month and now will be keen to bring customers back in the market and regain its market supremacy.
The Creta, in its first-generation avatar launched in March 2015, went on to become a bestseller for the company after clocking 466,839 units till end-January 2020 in the domestic market and having another 193,000 units exported to the Middle-East, South Africa and Latin American markets.
With its solid credentials, the crossover seems success-bound again in its second-generation with the company already receiving 14,000 bookings in less than two weeks between March 3 and March 16, the day its prices were announced and now managing to escalate that number to 24,000 units so far.
Hyundai is facing homegrown competition in the form of its sibling Kia Motors India which saw its Seltos crossover becoming a runaway success soon after its launch in August 2019.
