Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s (HMSI) Activa emerged as the best-selling two-wheeler by any OEM in India in March 2014, according to the company. The scooter sold nearly 179,000 units during the month.

The Activa was followed by Hero MotoCorp’s bestselling motorcycles – Splendor (163,000) and Passion (109,000). Hero’s HF Deluxe (95,000) and Bajaj Auto’s Discover (40,000) complete the list of the top 5 two-wheeler brands during March 2014.

It is for the second time that the Activa has topped the two-wheeler sales chart. Last September, it had topped the chart with sales of 141,000 units.

Speaking on the Activa’s strong performance, Yadvinder S Guleria, vice-president, sales & marketing, HMSI, says, “This clearly indicates that the Activa is exponentially getting acceptance as the most preferred choice of two-wheeler for commuting in the country. We are proud to share that the Activa is now strongly making inroads in Tier-2 towns and beyond.”

For the fiscal year ended March 2014, the Activa was the second-best seller in the two-wheeler industry. It sold 16.74 lakh units, an average of 139,000 units a month. The Activa’s strong performance reflects the growing preference for scooters in the country. During FY ’14 (April 2013-March 2014), the share of scooters in the overall two-wheeler segment stood at 34 percent, up from 29 percent in FY ’13. The Activa is currently available in two options which share the same 110cc engine. A 125cc variant is set to be launched on Monday, April 28.

The Activa has sold around 78 lakh units since its launch in May 2001.
