Honda Activa sales cross 10 million units in South India, last 5 million in 7 years
While the first five million Activa scooter sales in the southern states and Union territories took 16 years, the next five million have been sold in just seven years, reflecting the accelerated pace of demand for the 110cc and 125cc models.
Scooter market leader Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has announced that it has achieved cumulative sales of over 10 million units of the Activa scooter in the southern region of the country which includes states and Union territories like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Tamil Nadu is the largest market for HMSI and in July 2024, the company had announced that it had surpassed cumulative sales of five million two-wheelers in the state.
The Honda Activa, first introduced in 2001, has been instrumental in reviving the scooter market in the country and accounts for the bulk of HMSI’s cumulative 60 million sales of both scooters and motorcycles since CY2001. In March 2024, HMSI, which is in its 23rd year of manufacturing two-wheelers in India, had announced a major sales milestone of 60 million or six crore sales in the domestic market.
While the first five million Activa sales were surpassed in 2017, nearly 16 years after its launch, the next five million sales have come up in just seven years, highlighting its popularity. This includes the sales of the entire Activa family, including 110cc and 125cc models. The company has a strong sales and service network of over 1,700 touchpoints across South India.
Commenting on the 10-million milestone, Yogesh Mathur, Director, Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, said: “Achieving the 10 million Activa sales mark in the Southern region is a testament to the trust and loyalty of our customers. It reflects our relentless efforts to continuously keep innovating and provide exceptional value. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our customers and dealer partners for their support and are committed to deliver excellence in the years to come.”
1.2 million Activas sold in April-August 2024, up 27%
In the first five months of the current fiscal year, HMSI has sold a total of 23,45,028 two-wheelers or 2.3 million units which takes its total India market sales since CY2021 to 62.3 million units. Of the total two-wheelers sold in April-August 2024, the Activa siblings account for 12,86,074 units or 55%, with motorcycles (10,58,954 units) making up the balance 45 percent.
Demand continues to be robust for both the Activa 110cc and 125cc models and the 12,86,074 unit sales in the April-August 2024 period are a strong 27% YoY increase (April-August 2023: 10,10,442 units).
