General Motors plans to bring its new Chevrolet Trax to Brazil in an effort to end the dominance its US rival Ford Motor in small sport utility vehicle segment, says a Reuters report. The report has quoted GM executives as saying that the Trax, which it began building in Mexico this month will be offered in Brazil, but new trade barriers may be a hurdle as Brazil renegotiated a trade accord with Mexico this year to cap car imports and increased taxes steeply on foreign-made cars to protect industrial jobs.

Ford introduced its popular Brazilian-built EcoSport in 2003. The EcoSport will be launched in India in early 2013. compact SUV segment has since become one of the fastest-growing niches in the world's fourth-largest auto market. GM is looking at the Trax for India that can take on the EcoSport. The market for the compact SUV now has the Premier Rio and the just-launched Quanto.

For now, GM India plans to launched the Sail UVA in early November followed by the Chevy Enjoy a few months later.
