New Delhi, April 18, 2013: Integrated logistics provider DB Schenker India has called for the setting up of dedicated freight corridors in the country that will help improve supply chain efficiency substantially in the country.

Speaking at the International Conference on Dedicated Freight Corridor - Current Scenario and Challenges faced by the Logistics Industry, organised by ASSOCHAM, in New Delhi on April 16, Reiner A Allgeier, managing director of Schenker India, said: “Dedicated freight corridors will make 24x7 logistics happen in India. This will help us to integrate the production and delivery dynamics for our customers that includes reduction in handling and logistics costs, inventory cost, transit time and holding time, as well as elevate the quality of service to the next level and improve connectivity with ports and road networks, to form an inclusive intermodal strategy for first and last-mile delivery.”
The International Conference on Dedicated Freight Corridor was organised to discuss the challenges, opportunities and solutions for planning, financing and investment options, state perspectives, opportunities in heavy-haul rolling stock and container operations and energy efficiency.
The chief guest for the conference was Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union minister for Railways, The Ministry of Railways has proposed construction of freight corridors along the Golden Quadrilateral to expand economic, industrial and social growth. With DB Schenker the leading service provider in European rail freight and land transport, Allgeier referred to the rail-based transport model in Europe which can be used to improve the efficiency of current transport solutions in India.
At present, freight traffic on the Golden Quadrilateral linking the Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Howrah and its two diagonals — Delhi-Chennai and Mumbai-Howrah — carries over 55 percent of revenue-earning freight traffic for the Indian Railways. The routes of Howrah-Delhi on the eastern corridor and Mumbai-Delhi on the western corridor are highly saturated, which calls for creating dedicated routes.
