BMW Motorrad India, BMW's two-wheeler division, has registered its best performance in CY2020, despite the year being impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns across the country.

With sales of 2,563 units, which is a 6.65% year-on-year increase (CY2019: 2,403), the motorcycle maker has recorded its best-ever sales in India. In CY2018, BMW Motorrad India had sold 2,187 units. In 2017, the year in which the company began operations in the country, 252 units were sold.

G 310 twins the big sellers
BMW Motorrad India had got off to a good start in the year, having reported sale of 1,024 units in the first quarter, which constituted a 71.5% year-on-year growth, albeit on a low base (Q1 2019: 597). At the time, the India sales had contributed 3% to BMW Motorrad’s total global deliveries of 34,774 units in the first three months of 2020.

The momentum for BMW Motorrad India was primarily driven by the sub-500cc motorcycles – BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS – which accounted for over 80 percent of Q1 sales among motorcycle aficionados.

In CY2020, 80 percent of the total sales (or an estimated 2,050 units) comprised the new G 310 R and G 310 GS. The balance was made up by the R 1250 GS / GSA,  F 750 / 850 GS and the S 1000 RR.

On October 1, 2020, four years after the G 310 GS was launched in India, the two-wheeler arm of the BMW Group rolled out the new BMW G 310 GS from the assembly line of BMW Motorrad’s cooperation partner – TVS Motor Co – in Hosur. The new G 310 GS (and BMW G 310 R) have received small updates to the styling as well as a BS VI-compliant engine. The BMW G 310 twins use the same 312.2cc, single-cylinder, fuel injected, liquid-cooled engine that powers the BS6 Apache RR 310.

BMW Motorrad officially started its operations as a part of the Indian subsidiary of BMW Group in 2017. The G 310 R and G 310 GS have been developed in Munich, Germany by BMW Motorrad and are locally produced by cooperation partner TVS Motor Company in Hosur, India. These two bikes among the German manufacturer’s most affordable models, and an entry into its two-wheeler world.
