One of the highlights of ACMA’s annual convention is the giving away of awards to industry, across small and large-sized companies. This year was no different and a good number of suppliers were hailed as the deserving winners for achieving excellence in manufacturing, quality and productivity, technology, exports and also human resources.

The winning companies were eminently suited for this year’s session, what with the overall theme of the convention being ‘Winning with Quality and Innovation’. What makes them noteworthy is they form a small portion of the large number of ACMA member companies manufacturing a varied range of components, ranging from ball bearings through to crankshafts, forged components and complex plastic parts. Identifying these achievers is a tough task, as the jury has to sift through scores of entries and then validate their achievements.

With India fast turning into a growth engine for manufacturing operations, component suppliers will now have to keep innovating to drive new gains even as they focus on improving quality standards.

To achieve the ambitious target of the Automotive Mission Plan 2026, Indian auto component manufacturers will have to develop capabilities for in-house design, harness frugal engineering and create product differentiation through innovation. A move towards product and process innovation along with zero defect quality will be an integral part of this change. It will require industry to focus on quality and innovation more than ever before and to graduate from being a ‘build to print’ to one that is ‘art to part.’

The latest ACMA-McKinsey study says that Indian auto component manufacturers will have to integrate into global engineering development programmes and increase their R&D spends, focus on engineering and product development to participate in the next round of growth.

Here’s looking at the winners for 2015-16:
