Auto export numbers down 1.7 percent in Jan 2022

In its monthly update, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said the overall exports of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and PV had a decline of 1.7 percent for January 2022. A total of 454,953 units were exported in the month as against 463,077 units in January 2021.

Maruti Suzuki was the leading OEM exporter, (17,736 units) in the passenger cars with exports of 40,787 units in January 2022 when compared to 37,187 units in January 2021.

Posting a 3.7 percent drop, the three-wheeler exports for January 2022 was at 39,151 units as against 40,659 units in the previous year. Bajaj Auto exported the most three-wheelers at 25,804 units in January 2022.

According to SIAM, around 374,966 units of two-wheelers were exported for the month against 384,859 units during the same period in 2021, a 2.5 percent decline.  Around 187,934 units were exported by Bajaj Auto and 86,344 units were exported by TVS Motor Company during the month. 

Domestic auto sector sales including passenger cars and two-wheelers recorded a fall of 18 percent. While factors like lockdowns and curfews because of the Omicron affected the domestic sales, the shortage of containers and semiconductors have been cited as reasons for the fall in exports.
