August 1, 2013: Development has begun on the next-generation Audi Q7, using the platform that will underpin the new Bentley SUV. The full-size Q7 SUV will use the SUV-spec version of the Volkswagen Group’s new MLB modular platform; it’s designed to underpin a whole range of medium to full-size cars, in a similar way to the adaptability of VW’s MQB platform for small to medium-size cars (pictured).

The MLB platform will also underpin the next-generation VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne models, and a production version of the Lamborghini Urus concept. The next Q7, due next year, will shed up to 350kg from its kerb weight, thanks to a more extensive use of aluminium in its body and structure. It will also usher in a refresh of Audi’s design language.

Next-gen versions of the Touareg and Cayenne are due in around 2016-2017, so both firms are instead readying imminent facelifts for the current cars. The Urus is set to be built from 2017.
