Mumbai, October 30, 2012: Atul Auto, which manufactures three-wheelers, has announced plans to set up a manufacturing unit in Sri Lanka. The company aims to initially produce diesel-engined three-wheelers powered intra-city passenger and cargo application. This will be followed by three-wheelers powered by spark-ignition engines running on petrol, CNG and LPG.
Commenting on the foray, Neeraj Chandra, director, Atul Auto Ltd, said: “The three-wheeler market in Sri Lanka is vibrant and there is a growing domestic segment too. Setting up a plant there will help us to combat the import duty hike.”
In India, Atul Auto rolls out its products from Rajkot, powered by the BS III-approved 435cc diesel engine sourced from Greaves Cotton while the gearboxes are produced inhouse.
In an interaction with Autocar Professional last month, company officials had revealed that a product upgrade is on the way: a CNG-powered Gem three-wheeler by Diwali and an entry into the high-volume, 0.35-tonne segment by January 2013.
