Aprilia India launches Storm 125 scooter at Rs 65,000

by Autocar Pro News Desk , 30 May 2019

The fast-growing 125cc scooter market in India just expanded. Aprilia India today officially launched the Storm 125 at Rs 65,000 (ex-showroom, India). The Storm was first displayed at Auto Expo 2018, and this production-ready variant comes with a few changes.

Unlike the Aprilia SRs that come with 14-inch wheels, the Storm features 12-inch alloy wheels that are of a simpler design than those seen on the scooter at the Auto Expo. It also misses out on a front disc brake and gets drum brakes at both ends, along with CBS. However, Aprilia has said that a disc brake variant is in the works. Other differences on the production scooter are minor, like the addition of a grab handle and a white Aprilia logo instead of a red one.

The Storm comes equipped with Vee rubber off-road-oriented tyres that measure 120/80 in the front and 130/80 at the rear. In comparison, the SR sports 120/70 section rubber at both ends, and it recently switched from Vee Rubber to MRF Nylogrip Zappers. The scooter also features the bold graphics from the scooter displayed at the expo and will be available in two colour options.

The bodywork, lights, and analogue instrumentation meanwhile, are identical to the SR 125. The engine is borrowed from the SR 125 as well – it uses the same single-cylinder, three-valve air-cooled unit that makes 9.5hp at 7250rpm and 9.9Nm of torque at 6250rpm.

The Storm 125 costs around Rs 8,000 less than the SR 125 and, in terms of competition, will take on the TVS NTorq 125 (drum brake) that is priced much lower, at Rs 58,252, and the Honda Grazia (drum brake), which costs Rs 60,723 (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Speaking at the launch of the Storm 125 in Pune, Diego Graffi, managing director and CEO, Piaggio India, said, “We are delighted to launch the long-awaited Aprilia Storm in India. Known for its undisputed racing heritage, Aprilia uses cutting-edge technology to design and create premium differentiated products for the youth of the country that reflect the true characters of brand Aprilia. The Storm has a dynamic exterior theme with vibrant colours, specially designed wide terrain tyres, 125cc engine and customisation through accessories that makes it unique.”

Ashish Yakhmi, head of the two-wheeler business, added, “Our premium lifestyle products reflect the personalities and attitudes of the rider. We believe the Aprilia Storm will catch the imagination of the discerning Indian youth, break new ground and help us reach out to a larger audience.”
