Two-wheelers save the blushes for Indian auto in April-November 2013

New Delhi, December 10, 2013: As per SIAM’s just-released sales data, overall domestic sales during April-November 2013 grew marginally by 2.73 percent over the same period last year, mainly because of the growth in two-wheeler sales.

Sales of passenger vehicles declined by (-) 5.34 percent during April-November 2013 over the same period last year. Within the passenger vehicles category, passenger cars, UVs and vans dropped by (-) 4.97 percent, (-) 3.62 percent and (-) 12.23 percent respectively during April-November 2013 compared to the same period last year.

The overall commercial vehicles segment registered a de-growth of (-) 17.51 percent in April-November 2013. While Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) posted negative growth at (-) 26.81 percent, Light Commercial Vehicles also dropped by (-) 12.52 percent.

Three-wheeler sales fell by (-) 7.83 percent in April-November 2013 over the same period last year. Passenger carriers and goods carriers dropped by (-) 8.29 percent and (-) 5.70 percent respectively in April-November 2013 over April-November 2012.

Two-wheelers registered growth of 5.78 percent during April-November 2013 over April-November 2012. While scooter and motorcycle sales grew at 18.70 percent and 3.32 percent respectively, moped sales fell by (-) 10.49 percent in April-November 2013 over April-November 2012.

On the production front, the industry produced a total of 1,773,678 vehicles across all categories in November 2013 as against 1,644,723 in November 2012, a growth of 7.84 percent and mainly due to an increase in the output of two-wheelers.

During April-November 2013, overall automobile exports grew by 5.52 percent with 2,033,019 vehicles shipped overseas. Passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two- wheelers registered growth at 9.64 percent, 16.98 percent and 3.41 percent respectively, while commercial vehicles declined by (-)12.31 percent during April-November 2013 compared to the same period last year.
