Toyota Motor Corp has announced the recall of 1.43 million units of the Prius and CT200h models produced between 2010 and 2012 following concerns raised over their airbag inflator mechanism.
Although Toyota says there are no reports of any injuries or deaths, it has triggered the recall after discovering that some inflators could have a crack in a weld, causing it to separate when it operates. As a result, the airbag cannot fully inflate and parts of the inflator can be ejected with the airbag.
Toyota has confirmed that 1.43 million cars are affected and 482,000 of them are in the US so far. Concerned owners are being urged to contact dealerships.
The issue is it related to the Takata airbag recall, which also relates to faulty airbags and which affects numerous car manufacturers with Jaguar, Daimler and other automakers issuing a recall in the US last month. This is expected to be the largest automotive recall in history.
